Tokyo Game Show Shook by a Small Earthquake

This afternoon, just as the Tokyo Game Show was grinding to a halt for the day, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake shook northeastern Japan. There were no immediate injuries according to early reports.

The quake was 140 miles east of Tokyo, and the quake was felt at the Makuhari Messe, where TGS is held. The press room shook for about 20 to 25 seconds.

The March 11 quake remains a continuos reminder in Japan—even at TGS. There are donation boxes so TGS attendees can give to help with the rebuilding effort.

This morning while walking to TGS, Kotaku Japan editor Neil Hulihan pointed out the the sidewalk outside the train station to leading to TGS still bare the scars from the March quake.

Bricks were knocked out of place and not all were fixed. The sidewalk isn’t straight, and some of the curbs remained destroyed.

Today’s earthquake was nothing like March’s disaster, but a lingering reminder of what life is like in Japan.
